JOB DESCRIPTION
A highly motivated graduate student is needed to assist with a course development project in the Capacity Research Unit in the UBC School of Nursing. In this UBC Teaching & Learning Enhancement Fund (TLEF) supported project, we will develop an online course to prepare undergraduate students in the theory and practice of outreach. Outreach is a proven way to engage with people who experience significant marginalization and offer supports and services vital to their health and well-being.
As the course development coordinator, the successful graduate student will be based in the Capacity Research Unit at the UBC School of Nursing in Vancouver, BC and have the opportunity to work closely with a multi-disciplinary team, led by Dr. Vicky Bungay. This team includes teachers and clinicians from a variety of health and social science disciplines and experiential experts who have been the recipients of outreach services. As a coordinator, they will contribute to the overall success of this project by coordinating the overall project logistics, and assisting with course development, implementation and evaluation. As a Graduate Academic Assistant, they may also have the opportunity to engage with this project as a component of their thesis or SPAR activities.
WORK PERFORMED
The graduate academic assistant will be responsible for overall project coordination including:
- Project logistics such as coordinating the project workflow
- Set up and implement system for research data and course development document management
- Liaise with UBC support units e.g., CTLT, A/V, the UBC Learning Technology Hub
- Coordinate with other consultants e.g., video production team
- Organize stakeholder one-day consultation meeting, including room booking, catering, communication with attendees etc.
- Participate in content development, course implementation and evaluation
- Participate in course development team meetings
- Support the development of academic papers, community reports, and presentations
- Work in cooperation with other members of the course development team and communicate verbally and/or in writing regarding work progress
- Perform other related duties as required
ORGANIZATIONAL STATUS
This position reports directly to the Research Program Manager, Patricia Tait and the Course Development Lead, Dr. Vicky Bungay, and will collaborate with other team members. The coordinator will work under minimum supervision, receiving specific instructions on unusual or complex problems, and exercising a considerable amount of autonomy, discretion, and initiative in determining work procedures and methods. Established protocols related to privacy, confidentiality, and safety must be followed. This position has no formal supervisory responsibility.
QUALIFICATIONS
Undergraduate degree in a relevant health or social science discipline. Experience working with people who experience health and social inequities preferred. Due to the complexity involved in working with community-based partners, we require someone with excellent communication skills and experience working with interdisciplinary teams.
- Experience coordinating projects
- Experience working with social service and/or healthcare organizations or agencies
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds, including members of the community, people who experience health and social inequities, and health and social service providers
- Expertise and comfort with varied types of computer software (Word, Excel, Refworks, AdobePro, MS Publisher)
- Familiarity with UBC online teaching/learning tools is an asset
- Ability to work in a team environment, as well as be self-directed and to work independently
- Ability to exercise confidentiality, tact and discretion
